The community garden serves as a cornerstone of our outreach, offering a green space for residents to cultivate fresh produce and connect with nature. In the past year, we have expanded the garden's capacity, allowing more members to participate. We also use the pavilion space for arts and crafts , gardening and nature education.

Engaging children in outdoor arts and crafts activities offers numerous benefits, fostering creativity, enhancing motor skills, and promoting a connection with nature. Over the past two years, we have dedicated 1.5 hours each month to workshops that have not only nurtured artistic expression but also educated participants about conservation, recycling, and the reuse of materials, resulting in a total of 36 hours of enriching experiences. These sessions have encouraged children to appreciate the environment while developing an understanding of sustainable practices, thereby instilling values that contribute to their growth as environmentally conscious individuals.

This impressive yield is a testament to their commitment to sustainable practices such as companion planting, which enhances plant growth and biodiversity. By utilizing organic pest management techniques, gardeners have minimized harmful chemical use, ensuring a healthier ecosystem. Additionally, the application of natural soil amendments has enriched the soil, boosting plant vitality and productivity. These methods highlight the garden's role not only in providing nutritious food but also in fostering a resilient and environmentally conscious community.

We at the 18th Wonder Improvement Association are incredibly proud of Tanya Melendez, our director of community outreach and programs, for the heartwarming story she shared with us recently.

           A New Beginning

Three years ago, we embarked on a new journey to create a community garden in the 1000 block of Liggett Avenue. It was our first summer operating the garden, and Tanya was there, thinning rows of carrots she had planted. One day, a group of neighborhood kids approached her, curious about what she was doing.

Tanya took the time to explain the importance of thinning carrots and showed them how to grow their own. The kids were captivated and kept returning over the next few weeks to check on the carrots’ progress. When it was finally time to harvest, Tanya invited them to help. After washing the carrots, the children eagerly ate them, excitedly exclaiming, “I can’t wait to tell my mom that I ate carrots right out of the dirt!” Tanya humorously reminded them to mention they washed the carrots first.

This story brought smiles and laughter to the crowd gathered at our garden last Wednesday morning, including Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture, Russell Redding. His visit was part of the Shapiro Administration’s 2024 Urban Agriculture Tour, which highlights efforts to increase access to fresh food and break down barriers in urban areas.

From Pandemic Idea to Flourishing Garden

Our community garden, conceived during the COVID pandemic, serves the residents of Oakbrook Homes, a public housing development. With a modest $1,000 and a wishlist of supplies, Tanya reached out for community support. Volunteers, organizations, and local businesses contributed, transforming the plot into a flourishing garden.

           A Growing Success

Our garden’s success is evident. Starting with 12 raised beds, it has grown to 32. Each spring, residents can apply for a plot, with priority given to Oakbrook residents. Martin and Margarita Garcia were among the first to join in 2021. Through a translator, Martin expressed how the garden keeps them busy and entertained, while Margarita appreciated the opportunity to share their produce with friends and neighbors.

The garden now features a variety of crops, including tomatoes, eggplants, strawberries, and herbs. Tanya emphasized that everything you see here has been built and created entirely by the community. She also highlighted the spontaneous learning it fosters among neighborhood children.

On May 12th, 2024, a new pollinator garden was installed in City Park as part of a KRB project. Supported by the Department of Public Works, this garden enhances the area around the ceremonial flagpole and benefits the local ecosystem and community. Tanya Melendez, Amanda Funk, and Bethany Ayers-Fisher led this initiative.

In addition to its environmental impact, the garden offers educational opportunities. Park visitors can learn about the importance of pollinators, native plants, and sustainable gardening practices. This project not only raises awareness about environmental issues but also inspires community action to protect pollinators. The commitment of Tanya Melendez and Amanda Funk to achieving pollinator certification serves as a model for other communities.

In collaboration with the Public Works Department and Keep Reading Beautiful, we planned, set up, and oversaw the construction of a new raised bed garden at the Children's Home of Reading. This garden provides kids with a hands-on opportunity to cultivate and nurture plants throughout the summer, teaching them about gardening and healthy eating.

Thirteen families were invited to participate, receiving all necessary materials, instructions, and ongoing support to grow their own food in small spaces. Participants attended a workshop at Goggle Works Garden and will actively garden using the provided materials, tracking their harvests.

Aaliyah Zambrano: Learning and Growing with the Green Team

Aaliyah Zambrano's journey with the Green Team has been a transformative one. The experience has taught her valuable life lessons, instilled confidence, and provided a platform to make a difference in her community. Aaliyah's interaction with her community was limited. She only stepped out to board the school bus or visit a friend's house. Joining the Green Team opened a new world for Aaliyah. It underlined the fact that a little bit of help could indeed bring about a significant change. The team taught her life lessons, such as opening her first bank account, which made her feel responsible and adult-like.

The Green Team also encouraged her to participate actively in her community, an experience she truly cherishes. The confidence gained from the Green Team led her to apply and work for the Public Works Department under the City of Reading Mayor Moran 2023 Summer Youth Employment Initiative Program.

Aaliyah's future looks promising. She has been accepted by Alvernia and is excited about experiencing college life. Aaliyah is majoring in Early Childhood Education B.A. with Grades PK – 4 & Special Education PK-12 Certifications.

Jeremiah Santiago: Inspired to Be Better

Jeremiah Santiago's association with the Green Team has inspired him to strive for betterment and reinforced his belief in the power of hard work.

The Green Team made a significant impact on Jeremiah. It taught him about work ethics and laid a foundation for his future work performance. The experience also enabled him to buy a bike and save up for his first car.

Today, Jeremiah is putting his learnings to good use. He works as an assistant director at the Olivet Boys and Girls Club, helping keep kids off the streets and ensuring they have a great time.

Jeremiah envisions a bright future for himself. He is preparing for college and constantly striving to improve himself financially, skillfully, and mentally. Jeremiah plans to major in accounting as he is good with numbers, a talent he discovered during the Green Team's financial literacy classes. After 2 years at Berks, he plans to transfer to a State College.

Both Aaliyah and Jeremiah are shining examples of how the Green Team at the 18th WONDER initiative is helping shape the future of young individuals. We look forward to sharing more such inspiring stories.

READING, Pa. | After years of planning, the Oakbrook Line Project in Reading is kicking off and is slated to improve mobility around the Reading area. (WFMZ)

"We're going to make sure that everybody knows Reading exists," said Reading Mayor Eddie Moran. (WFMZ)

Mayor Moran said the City is about to become much more accessible. (WFMZ)

"Our mission of revitalizing Reading includes our gateways and surrounding areas that connect us with our county, with our Commonwealth, the nation and the world," said Mayor Moran.

Surrounded by community leaders and city officials on the corner of East Wyomissing Boulevard and Rose Virginia Road, Mayor Moran spoke about the Oakbrook Line project. It is a goal to widen islands and add paths to improve pedestrian and bicycling safety.

David Talarico of the Eighteenth Ward Improvement District said the effects will go beyond the paths.

"This is all about connecting neighborhoods, connecting people to activities and promoting local road for businesses and economic development," said Talarico.

Reading City Council member Lucine Sihelnik said a path will run from Lancaster Avenue to Museum Road all the way down to Schlegel Park and Lancaster Avenue.

"It does take time, it does take a lot of money, it does take patience, but with all those things we're going to continue to make great things happen here." said Sihelnik.

The enhancements will also include ramps, sidewalks and curb repairs.

"We'll continue to be innovative; we'll continue to bring projects that are worth it and we will continue to sign whatever contract is needed to make sure that Reading is beautified and improved," said Sihelnik.

The Mayor's office said planning for this project has taken almost five years. We are told this layer should be wrapped up sometime in the fall or early spring.

focuses on helping Oakbrook reach food security. In 2020, the Victory Garden Task Force successfully gave over 100 garden boxes to the Oakbrook Community (Berks Weekly).

After the success of the garden boxes, the natural progression of the initiative was to organize and plan a community garden to allow the Oakbrook Community to grow their own vegetables and herbs in a local and secure area (Berks Weekly).

“The goal is to empower people to grow their own food, improving food security for individuals and families in need”

said Tanya Melendez, Neighborhood Alliance Chairperson (Berks Weekly).

“We want to be able to provide this community the opportunity for positive social interaction and recreation in a beautiful, non-threatening atmosphere where individuals of all ages and backgrounds may interact in a healthy pursuit (Berks Weekly).”

became a collaborative group of different organizations and partners that brought their unique assets to the team (Berks Weekly).

These organizations include the 18th Wonder Improvement Association, Berks Community Health Center, Berks Nature, the City of Reading, Reading Housing Authority, St. Constantine and Helen, and, United Way of Berks County. The outpouring of donations and volunteers from the community has also been significant for this project (Berks Weekly).

The community garden is located on the Reading Housing Authority’s property at 1040 Liggett Ave. in the fenced area next to the Berks Community Health Center. The location is ideal for the Oakbrook Neighborhood to have access to the community garden within walking distance (Berks Weekly).

Volunteers worked for several months to prepare the space and build raised garden beds. The goal of the project is to help people with limited mobility and to provide educational opportunities and resources, free of charge to the public (Berks Weekly).

In early June, the group held its first educational workshop installing rain barrels in the community garden site (Berks Weekly).

The housing authority serves more than 1,600 low-income residents in the proposed garden site.

"A mere eight community gardens exist in our city of 88,000 to create healthy green community spaces," the group wrote in its proposal on the Gardens for Good website. "Oakbrook Community garden will help us provide opportunities for more of our most underserved and vulnerable residents to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It will help hold space and beautify our urban areas by changing the aesthetic and the spirit of a community."

Food deserts are prevalent in Reading, and the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened food insecurity.

Since 2007, the housing authority and its resident councils have been working with Berks Nature, establishing five organic community gardens in its elderly and disabled high-rise communities and the other in its mixed family community.

The proposal says it has been a goal of the housing authority to have gardens growing in each of the seven properties of 1,610 public housing units.

"Last year gardeners planted everything from tomatoes to peppers, to cilantro to squash," the group wrote in its proposal. "It was discovered that although many gardeners enjoy bending to the soil, other residents find it easier and more enjoyable planting in a raised garden. We have had several raised gardens from the beginning but last year built an additional 18 raised gardens. The gardens have improved relations and have fostered great relationships amongst gardeners and other residents."

Tanya Melendez of the 18th Ward Neighborhood Alliance knew she had to do something special for the kids this Halloween.

Most children in the 18th Ward weren't trick-or-treating this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, Melendez and John Masano, CEO of Tom Masano Auto Group started brainstorming.

"How can we do something safe and fun?" Melendez said. "Everyone loves a firetruck."

Masano recently purchased a former Reading firetruck at a city auction.

"Let's just escort the firetruck, make a lot of noise and hand out some candy," Melendez said.

With the help of about 15 volunteers from Alvernia University and Berks Catholic High School the group handed out candy as they walked through the Oakbrook and Millmont neighborhoods Saturday evening.

Mayor Eddie Moran also participated in the event.

In the drizzling rain Friday afternoon, Oakbrook Homes resident Shelly Rosario and her three young sons became the first people to take books out of the 18th Ward's first official Little Free Library.

"It's awesome," Rosario said at the library housed in front of the Oakbrook Homes administration building. "We have a problem at home because we have books, but they get tired of the same stories all the time. They can bring those books here and also read someone else's stories."

The Little Free Library is part of a bigger initiative of the 18th Wonder Improvement Association, a community group focused on revitalizing Reading's southwestern neighborhoods.

The goal to bring 18 Little Free Libraries to the ward has been eight months in the making, according to Tanya Melendez, a member of the organization's resident committee.

"I'm super hyper and excited about them," Melendez said about the libraries. "I hope that not only it gets people reading but that it builds a sense of community."

The creation of the boxes was a community effort, Melendez said.

At the start of the year, Hector Ruiz, an 18th Ward resident and owner of Sofrito Gastro Pub, created and established the ward's first prototype Little Free Library, stationed near his Millmont home.

Students at the Reading Muhlenberg Career & Technology Center designed the 18th Wonder logo, Reading Eagle Company donated 18 used newspaper distribution boxes and car dealer Tom Masano donated time, labor and materials to paint the boxes, Melendez said.

Another library is housed near Melendez's home in the 800 block of Margaret Street and the other 16 libraries will be placed around the ward in coming weeks, Melendez said.

All of the libraries will be registered with the national Little Free Library organization. People can find libraries near them at

Melendez said she looks forward to upcoming improvement efforts planned for the spring, including making the ward more pedestrian friendly, public meetings and a youth scholarship essay contest.
